Uluru is sacred to the local Aboriginals because it is believed to be created at the beginning of time by 10 ancestral beings and the Aboriginals have honoured this by still to this day performing rituals and drawing new rock paintings. Kata Tjuta is sacred because they identified Mount Olga (one of the many rocks in Kata Tjuta) as the home of the snake Wanambi (also known as a rainbow serpent.)
