The aboriginal explanation is different to the geologists explanation of how Uluru is formed because the Aboriginals think that the ancestral beings that broke through the earth when the earth was black and their was nothing there. As they moved around the earth hunting and fighting each other and as they did this they created rocks, rivers and natural features. The story is that 10 of these ancestral beings and that makes Uluru sacred. For Kata Tjuta it is because it is the home of the snake Wanambi (also known as a rainbow serpent.) They continue to do cave paintings and rituals in these scared places. Where as the geologists explanation says that it was formed from 4 stages of time creating fans, pressing the fans, folding and tilting and wearing away. Fans were created millions of years ago from rocks and debris falling to the ground by rain forming fan like shapes in the ground, there was only two fans, one was made by rock and the other one was mainly sand. After time both eroded and tilted. The fans are still eroding on this day. Uluru and Kata-Tjuta is truly a rock slab that continues into the ground possibly 5-6km deep into the ground.
